![]() These two characters are also the absolute highlight of the drama in general – you’ll get attached to them easily and root for them to solve the cases and their own mysteries. Signal starts off in a very interesting way – a detective from the present time, profiler Park Hae Young (Lee Je Hoon) finds a walkie-talkie and finds out that the person on the other side is none other than the missing detective Lee Jae Han (Jo Jin Woong) who is not only in the past but also somehow already knows him even though Hae Young definitely doesn’t know him? Yes, you will definitely be intrigued right from the start to connect the dots and find out what happened in the past and what will happen in the present too. Police officers Hae Yeong, Jae Han, and Cha So Hyun then set out on a journey to solve cold cases. One day, he finds a walkie-talkie that allows him to get in contact with Detective Lee Jae Han who is in the past. Fifteen years later, Hae Yeong is now a police officer and criminal profiler. As time went by, Hae Yeong started distrusting the police. A few days later, the girl was found dead, and the police were not able to find the culprit. More on that in today’s review below.įrom MyDramaList: Fifteen years ago, a young girl was kidnapped on the way from school, and Park Hae Yeong, who was an elementary school student at that time, witnessed the crime. Signal had its ups and downs but it remained a very solid watch until the end. However, the drama’s true highlight is its amazing cast – Lee Je Hoon, Kim Hye Soo and Jo Jin Woong really did some pretty great work in this drama and I really got attached to their characters with Jo Jin Woong stealing the spotlight from start to finish. Signal has a fantastic premise – detectives communicating through time via a walkie-talkie and solving crimes both in the past and the present together? Sign me up. Fun Fact: The script was originally drafted in English but changed to Ndebele because * in Sparta Voice* This Is Zimbabwe.Signal has been on our radar for quite a while and it’s great that we can finally write about this, now already a classic, crime k-drama. Someone has to forge the path and hopefully this is the first of more to come. ![]() It’s a first for Zimbabwe and wont take away the ground breaking work. Its not an entirely original concept, for example there is the 2016 movie Cell based on a book by Stephen King where a cell signal turns people into zombies… And I watched The Signal while waiting for the next episode of The Last Of Us which is a TV series based on video game set in a post apocalyptic world with zombies and of course, you have to do, what you have to do, to endure and survive. I have so many unanswered questions, what happens next, what’s up with The Signal, why is it here, where is the rest of the world… but then you could say its just a short film that’s the beauty of it, to make up the answers as you go. You get to the end and be like, I hope they are making the rest of it because this is such a teaser… It feels more like the intro to a pilot episode of a TV show. Its very short… it’s 17 minutes and 45 seconds, well, it is a short film. Its intense with a haunting soundtrack that keep you on the edge of your seat for the entire runtime.ĭon’t take my word for it, The Signal has bagged a couple of awards on the local scene and internationally such as Best Live Action Short Film at the 2022 Brooklyn SciFi Festival and the Daniel Lasker scooped the director’s prize for cultural impact and achievement at the 2022 Film Quest festival. The cinematography and visual effects are on point, of course you can tell the production budget was limited, but they made it work. The casting is brilliant, Tawanda Denga’s character David was hard and loved the trio’s on screen chemistry, whatever else these guys are in, count me in to watch it. The Signal is Zimbabwe’s first Sci-Fi Film!!!!!!Talk about ground breaking and its in Ndebele with English subtitles. ![]() Endure and Survive!!! (that phrase has been stuck in my mind since watching The Last Of Us review coming when I watch the last episode □)įirst thing first, my regulars will know that I have penchant for Sci-Fi and Fantasy ( books and movies) especially Afrocentric renditions of such themes and genres. The short film is set in a post-apocalyptic location in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe where a mysterious “signal” corrupts and controls those who hear it, turning them into soulless demons.
